Part of the problem, I think, is that ethnography has been shorn away from anthropology.

Shorn away from theory in general! I fully agree the main problem is a pervasive ahistorical approach to simply everything. Ethnography is just one of many victims of this. Imagine an article written in 2007 being considered “too old” to be useful. Seriously? I routinely cite things from the 19th and 20th centuries. If an idea gets old in 8 years, it wasn’t a very good idea in the firsts place.
