As an experienced hydraulic modeller in water and waste-water industry for UK, I am summarizing few essential start-up steps to get involved in hydraulic modelling.

1. To model / simulate the waste-water network related issues, please read through WaPUG code of practice (the Code of Practice provides good practice guidance to organizations commissioning and developing hydraulic models of urban drainage systems used for planning and design, providing a significant contribution to developing sustainable, resilient and adaptable urban drainage systems in the 21st Century). This is an important document of reference which can be often referred to during various phases of project.

2. Also read through client specification guidelines, clients such as Southern Water, Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water, Norther Ireland Water, Northumbian Water, Welsh Water, Scottish Water have more specific guidelines.

3. Different set of Modelling projects

  • Model Building of assets and ancillaries
  • Flow Survey Assessment
  • Model Verification against flow servery data or Telemetry data based on client requirement
  • Optioneering
  • Growth modelling — future scenario modelling
  • Capacity check modelling — For new real estate developments in catchment
  • Report writing

4. Applications/Software used

  • Map Info Professional
  • Q GIS
  • SWMM
  • Infoworks ICM
  • Info Asset Manager
  • Google Earth
  • SQL tools to check and automate tasks
  • MS Office Tools
  • Autocad
