Remedies for a Healthier Internet
On July 18–19, 2017 I had the pleasure of attending a meeting of the minds with Mozilla leaders from across the nation, including Mozilla staff. One thing that stood out to me as we presented ideas for training in our individual work contexts is that there is something that resonated within each of us and although we were contextualizing it, I could feel the passion in my fellow leaders as they engaged us in activities that addressed Internet Health. We wrestled with biases in computer algorithms, fear of cookies, eradicating digital inequities, and dominating databases. The problems were complex and controversial and we were looking for remedies.
Just in case vs. Just in Time

It struck me that we weren’t willing to put a band aid on these issues by offering a one-shot training. Each of us had a larger, long term plan of ongoing education and training that would build capacity around our work in creating the kind of Internet we all want it to be: safe, fun, creative, accessible and educational. We are among many who realize that the issues that we face around the health of the Internet are not just in case we need to know or need to do something. The challenges are real and they are here. We are fortunate to have funding and support from Mozilla, our libraries, and one another to take steps in contributing to a better Internet through education, training and advocacy. We hope to make a difference-just in time.
