How awesome is audio?
Audacity is a free online computer and audio software application that can be downloaded from the internet for multiple operating systems. It allows users to record and modify audio to their likening. It can be used to reduce noise, link audio clips together, and adjust the pitch or fading. There is also the option of importing audio (however this was not to be done for this module).
The interface was relatively simple to use with all the tabs being at the top of the screen. Using the generate tab allows the user to play around with the noise, silence, and tone for instance. The effects tab has many options to alter and create an audio recording of your choice. For the 1-minute audio track, I chose to use “bass, fade in, fade out, and change the tempo”. After creating the audio track, I was able to go back and edit it to how I wanted. The audio file can then be exported from the application.
In terms of ownership and licensing, since the software is completely free to download and use, their website states that:
“You may also copy, distribute, modify, and/or resell Audacity, under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) as published by the Free Software Foundation — either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. In granting you this right, the GPL requires that the source code you distribute is itself available under the GPL. If you distribute or recommend Audacity in any way, please cite our trademark by referring to Audacity as “Audacity(R)”.
With that being said, if a copy of Audacity is paid for when downloaded the user is responsible for reporting such information to the credit card company with the false advertising. However, this should be done as soon as possible as there is a time limit on when the refund can be processed.
For creating audio clips, the possibilities with this software is endless. With the noise removing option, its convenient for situations where the background noise cannot be controlled or unexpected. There are no limits on the length of the audio clips or voice recordings so even podcasts can be made. In addition, there is even the option of audacity as a portable app for users to create audio files and place them onto a USB without a trace of any personal information.
