Firstly, if you haven’t read Scott Westerfelds ‘Extras’, you really should. It’s really compelling YA science fiction. I mainly enjoy the exploration of future societies, which is really what attracts me to the genre.
Ok, we’ve got that out of the way. So, Extras is basically a narrative about a girls life (I forget the name) after the last trilogies’ protagonist Tally Youngblood tackles the government. We are now in an Asian culture inspired city. Basically the upper, middle, and lower class are divided through ‘face rank’. Basically, you need fame to be at the top.
Cool, here’s something more. Everyone in Extras has a ‘feed’ which is ultimately a way for each citizen to have a fair way to obtain the higher calling, or ‘fame’. Unlike social platforms like FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc, it’s main focus is journalism, all of the cities residents want the next ‘big’ scoop. It’s just all in one large social network.
Is Medium kind of like that? The whole focus of medium is to tell stories, whatever they may be. Fictional, or real. Am I missing the focus of Medium, am I not? Let me know. That’s just a connection I made, thanks for reading.
