Wikipedia states, “Zoom Video Communications, Inc. is an American communications technology company headquartered in San Jose, California. It provides video telephony and online chat services through a cloud-based peer-to-peer software platform and is used for teleconferencing, telecommuting, distance education, and social relations.”

For the non-technicals here, Zoom is an application that provides video-conferencing facility. I have personally used the Zoom app multiple times for video calling with clients and even used it during our brainstorming sessions. I always liked the application for two simple reasons, 1st it was free (haha) and second, that it had all the features from screen-sharing to raise-hand, and it presented it very neatly. Never did I imagine that the video-conf app would become such a huge hit.

The rise of Covid-19 brought in massive demand for Video Sharing Platforms, and Zoom used this opportunity to a significant extent. So much so, that its stock price, which was at 65$ Last year, December is now soaring at 150$ in a span of mere four months. O boy! If only I had invested in the stock then (haha).

Feels awesome that a Tech company is not just rising in its height, but is also of great use during this challenging time where educational institutes are locked-down. The application came as a boon to many. School Management System

The truth, however, dawned upon us late. A dozen privacy and security problems have been found in the application recently. “Zoombombing” has now distracted millions of online webinars. For the newbies, zoombombing is the situation wherein an unwanted person joins a private zoom meeting, for stealing private information, or worse, displaying obscene contents that could scar our child’s mindset. The Jerusalem Post quotes, “These so-called Zoom raids — unwanted intrusions − are characterized by profane images posted during video conferences, and racist and antisemitic illustrations drawn with a writing tool across slides. These severe breaches of privacy have led to a wave of bans. Singapore banned the platform’s use at schools following the posting of obscene images. The UK Ministry of Defense banned it due to security concerns. The US Senate and the Pentagon have also banned its use. Last week, schools in New York City were told they could not use it for distance learning. Google has banned its use on employees’ work-sanctioned laptops.”

Technology is a boon in the hands of the sacred, but a destruction module in the hands of the creeps.

Zoom meetings started the year on a high note, but privacy breaches and security issues have now caused a massive stir in the company’s market. The final nail to the coffin is the now emerging Ed-Tech sector, many of which developed LMS (Learning Management System), even from scratch, to cater to the enormous Indian education market. Every week, hundreds of schools are now getting on-board with this newfound Community-Driven LMS Platforms. The number will only increase for the latter as the weeks pass by. Meanwhile, Zoom is now trying to restructure its security protocols, but with lost faith over privacy concerns, there is little hope for the company.

We at Schoollog School Management Software have recently launched our LMS earlier this month. With a whopping 97 schools on board within three weeks of launch, we are excited to be a part of the new era. Thanks for reading.
