Stack Magazine — Our Review

I don’t think you can beat magazines. I do follow online blogs and I have a few online magazines that I browse from time to time, but I’m not sure that really compares to a physical edition. It might be a like a good book, it doesn’t really feel the same reading it on kindle or maybe I’m just a really tactile person.

Along with magazines, is my love of something new. Finding out about new things, discovering new ideas and having something new to read. When I first heard about Stack Magazine I was super excited, they marry the two of favourites of mine into once monthly subscription.

Who are stack magazine?

Stack picks the best independent magazines and delivers them to your door. Every month for just £7 — which is really cheap considering the cost of an exciting magazine these days — they send you a different magazine. Stack launched in 2008 as a side project — by founder Steven Watson who was an independent magazine fan who wanted to help more people discover great new publishing. Today they deliver thousands of magazines every month to customers all around the world, and their annual Stack Awards celebrates the best work done by independent editors, designers and publishers.

Why are they so good?

There is something very exciting about a subscription that changes all the time — it is something we try and do with SlowBox, no two months are the same — it’s just like this with Stack. So not only do you have a new exciting magazine to thumb through each month, it differs from other magazine subscriptions because it is a completely different one!

I generally get bored of magazine subscriptions because it is the same format, the same tone and they do look fairly similar. It almost becomes predictable after a few months. The thrill for me with Stack is that you never know what you’re going to get!

Their magazines are also of a great quality — I was a bit sceptical when I first signed up because £7 seemed really cheap when most indie magazines retail at between £10–25 on the high-street. I was not disappointed! The range is really interesting, not just from the UK, and the magazine quality is brilliant.

They also now have a shop — this is a fairly new addition to their website but it is great. There is a whole range of magazines to choose from and you can filter between topics like Photography, Food&Drink and Design. None of the magazines listed is your average high-street magazines and unless you have time to hunt out your nearest indie magazine shop you have probably not seen most of them.

Final thoughts

So far I haven’t got anything bad to say. The magazines arrive on time, they use no plastic in their packaging and all of their information is great. They have a good customer service team too!

I would recommend Stack Magazines to anyone who ticks one of the following:

  • Doesn’t have time to go to their indie magazine shop
  • Loves Post
  • Loves tactile magazines
  • Gets bored of traditional magazine subscriptions easily
  • Loves magazines
  • Loves new things
