David Blumenstein

Minicomic of the Month Club 2015

I’m a cartoonist, storyboard artist, writer, animator and graphic scribe in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve done comics for Guardian Australia, Australian MAD, Crikey, Junkee and SBS Comedy. I’m also a founder of Australia’s funnest open cartoonists’ workspace, Squishface Studio.

What is your favourite thing to draw? Do you keep a sketchbook? What do you fill it up with?

I draw a lot of stumpy little people. Lately I’ve drawn Tony Abbott a lot; that’s basically over, I’m hoping.

I fill sketchbooks with writing and dumb ideas. Lots of thumbnails for comics pages.

What’s a great comic you’ve read recently?

These regular strips Toby Morris (NZ) does for some website are good. I haven’t read issue #2 of The Eltingville Club (Evan Dorkin, USA) yet but it’s in my backpack waiting for me. David Pope’s cartoon when the Charlie Hebdo shooting happened was a good one.

I just bought a couple Krazy Kat books, those are mental (in a very good way).

What’s the most enjoyable part of the comics making process for you?

I think I like all of it? Or none of it? Coming up with a good stupid idea is fun, then using each part of comics process (script/thumbs/pencils/inks/etc) to edit and hone it down into something good is nice.

Is print dead?

Of course it fucking isn’t.

Do you remember the last cool thing you got in the mail?

My baby’s birth certificate.
