Jake Lawrence 2017 Season

Do you keep a sketchbook? What do you fill it up with?

I have too many sketchbooks! They’re usually just for little doodles or dumb comics that I don’t have the heart to finish. Also because I work a lot digitally I usually have a photoshop file open which is just a big canvas for warm ups, character design and testing out colour palettes I want to use in future comics, kind of like a digital sketchbook.

Tell me about your favourite pen

Is saying my Wacom pen a cop out? I use it the most but I’ve been through like 3 in the last few years but thats probably my fault for pressing too hard. Aside from that I have one of those speedball calligraphy pens and its the best, it’s so smooth… and… aside from that I’ll pretty much use anything thats laying around.

What’s deader — Print, or Mail?

Well I still see a lot of books and comics and what not for sale but I only seem to get mail from the optometrist I haven’t been to in 3 years so I’d say mail. I appreciate people who still send postcards and letters, I should do it more but I’m bad enough at replying to emails.

What’s a good comic you’ve read recently?

The last comic I read was Red Rackham’s Treasure, I’m slowly making my way through all the adventures of Tintin, I want to make a comic about a big adventure one day. Aside from that I think the best comics I’ve read lately are the ones Anna Syvertsson makes and puts up on her tumblr/instagram/twitter, she has such a funny way of writing and drawing from her life, I love her stuff a lot!

The people and animals in your comics are often alternating between celebrating their cuteness/greatness or being lost and hoping everything will be ok. What do you think — is everything going to be ok?

I sure hope so! My plan this year will be to do more positive comics in the hope of counteracting all of the bad that’s in the world or at the very least make someone laugh and forget about the badness for a few seconds. I’m going to try extra hard not to lean into the dread.
