Matt Emery is a cartoonist from New Zealand, but he lives in Melbourne and works mostly against his will as a postman. He also runs Pikitia Press, publishing Australian and New Zealand cartoonists.
What is your favourite thing to draw? Do you keep a sketchbook? What do you fill it up with?
I like drawing people walking and talking. Don’t have proper sketchbooks, lots of half filled exercise books with scribbled notes and stories. Also have lots of loose pieces of paper with comic ideas on them. Very disorganised, messy comics making process.
What’s a great comic you’ve read recently?
Usagi Yojimbo Saga Vol 4 by Stan Sakai. Probably one of my favourite comics of all time.
Was lucky to meet Stan at a signing at Minotaur comics a few years back, his stories have so much heart in them.
What’s the most enjoyable part of the comics making process for you?
Love the inking process but probably equally enjoyable is the writing process, throwing ideas around, solving problems in my head while working on menial day job tasks. Ray Bradbury’s process resonates with me greatly.
Is print dead?
No way man. I like looking at comics online but I love reading them on paper.
Do you remember the last cool thing you got in the mail?
Some New Zealand published comics from the 1950's from a person in the UK.
