While the field of AI has witnessed significant milestones and breakthroughs across the globe that has shaped its development from inception to this present day, it has in some way pose as a threat in terms of running humans out of their jobs.

In this article, we will take a journey through some of the key milestones and breakthroughs that have marked the evolution of AI.

  1. Dartmouth Conference (1956): The birth of AI as a field is often traced back to the Dartmouth Conference, held in the summer of 1956. At this conference, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Allen Newell, and Herbert A. Simon, among others, coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” and laid the groundwork for the study of intelligent machines.

2. Early AI research (1950s-1960s): During this period, AI pioneers focused on developing symbolic AI systems. They aimed to create computer programs capable of performing tasks that required human intelligence, such as problem-solving and natural language understanding. Notable early works include The Logic Theorist (1955) by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon and the General Problem Solver (1959) by Newell and J.C. Shaw.

3. Expert Systems (1960s-1970s): Expert systems were among the first successful applications of AI. These systems were designed to emulate the decision-making abilities of human experts in specific domains. One of the famous expert systems was MYCIN, developed in the early 1970s, which could diagnose bacterial infections and suggest treatments.

The inability to deliver on some early promises led to a period called the “AI Winter,” where funding and interest in AI dwindled. It was a challenging time for the field, and AI research slowed down significantly.

7. The Rise of Data and the Internet (2000s): With the exponential growth of data and the widespread adoption of the Internet, AI applications started gaining traction. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and IBM began investing heavily in AI research and applications.

8. Deep Learning and Neural Networks (2010s): Deep learning, a subfield of machine learning focused on neural networks with many layers, saw tremendous breakthroughs. Models like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) revolutionized computer vision, and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) made significant strides in natural language processing.

9. AI in Everyday Life (2010s-2020s): AI became an integral part of everyday life, with virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant becoming mainstream. AI also found applications in recommendation systems, autonomous vehicles, healthcare diagnostics, and more.

10. Narrow AI and AI Ethics (2020s): Currently, AI primarily operates in narrow domains, excelling at specific tasks but lacking general intelligence. Ethical considerations around AI, such as bias, privacy, and the impact of AI on the job market, gained increasing attention.

11. Advancements in AI Research (2020s): AI research continued to advance rapidly, with the development of more sophisticated language models like GPT-3, which can generate human-like text and perform a wide range of language-related tasks.

There is more to AI history, evolvement and development as the journey of AI continues.
