I am writing to say hello. Two years ago I was sitting on a sun lounger on holiday and read Yoga Girl by Rachel Brathen. It inspired me to think about my own campaign, I had plenty of ideas but didn’t know how to build and create it. After the holiday my little dream stayed quietly in my head, rising now and again when I was motivated for change.
Life for me was very busy, wife and three children including one with special needs. I constantly juggled in being the best Mum for all of them but suffered terribly with anxiety due to the added pressure of having a daughter with cerebral palsy. As well as being tremendously proud of her I was beginning to feel tormented by the frustrations of the systems, fighting to get help for her, the constant demands of form filling, paperwork, letter writing and appointments. I hated everything about that part.
Once my daughter had finished her mainstream education at 19 years old she moved to a residential college to learn independence, customer services and to generally have fun.
Then three months later I saw an advertisement for a course studying Social Media with DigitalMumsHQ and their #workthatworks strategy. It shocked me just how excited I got just reading about it. I knew this was something I would enjoy and I could fit in when my daughter came home during holidays.
I am loving using my brain again, even though I have found the time restraints of studying quite challenging.
My aim for the campaign Sen Smiles is to provide a happy place for people in my position to go to each day for local and national special needs information, news, guidance, positive thoughts and to share my love of yoga and well being. There will be a mixture of posts and photos of motivation, a place to help each other and to lift your mood. I’m just putting on things that I know would’ve helped me during the frustrating times. Life should be about helping each other and that is my aim. Two years on, my campaign through this course is coming to life.
