Athletic self-assessment
Watching the Olympics brings to mind how I roughly approximate and rate my performance in any given athletic endeavor. I figure that if I’m twice or half what a pro or elite does, then I’m doing pretty well.
For example:
Olympic swimmers do 100s in under a minute; my best are just over two.
Elite half marathoners are an hour or so; I am right around two hours. Or another way, elite marathoners finish a bit over two hours, and I just yesterday broke two hours in the half.
The best triathletes finish a 70.3 race in well under four hours and the full 140.6 in nine. I haven’t yet finished one of these (DNFed my first try at a 70.3) but have a goal of 7.5 hours for the 70.3 distance. Any thoughts of a full IRONMAN race are at least two years off, after I’ve completed quite a few more shorter distances.
