Booed by who? USA or the people who live there?

In any case, it seems like historically, the only stable country borders are oceans. Whenever you have countries divided by (often literally) a line in the sand, the temptation to rearrange things to one’s own benefit is too great. If you can’t be bordered by water on all four sides, at least having a couple of natural boundaries makes defending the others more achievable.

The EU, of course, is an attempt to impose a supranational governance framework that stabilises borders. I wonder whether the only stable way forward for the M.E. is something similar.
