Lesser Known Sensory-Seeking Traits of Autism
You may have an idea of what autistic sensory processing disorder looks like, but It isn’t just rocking and spinning.
You may think all autistic people are mainly sensory sensitive and you would be wrong.
I want to talk today about autistic people who are more sensory seeking than I am. People may miss that they are autistic because they don’t know about these traits or they miss it in their children as well if they are more on the sensitive side themselves (Like I missed some of these traits in my child).
And some people miss these signs because they don’t know that they and/or their spouse are autistic.
Sensory-seeking is about trying to maintain equilibrium through stimming because certain senses are understimulated. Avoiding these repetitive behaviors leaves their senses understimulated and may lead to lethargy, irritable moods, anxiety, and depression. And of course, worsen the frequency of meltdowns.
Here are some lesser-known traits of autistic children who are more sensory seeking:
- They encroach on people’s standard bubble of acceptable bodily space and talk in their faces. They may touch or even kiss other children a lot when it is not welcomed.
