Backlash refers to the angle that the output shaft of a gearhead can rotate without the input shaft moving. Or in other words described as the amount of lost motion due to clearance or slackness when movement is reversed and contact is re-established. This gap means that when a gear train is reversed the driving gear must be turned a short distance before all the driven gears start to rotate.

Backlash is measured in arc-min. 1 arc-min is 1/60th of 1 Deg. And 1 arc-sec is 1/60th of 1 arc-min

Backlash is necessary to provide the running clearance needed to prevent binding of the mating gears, which can result in heat generation, noise, abnormal wear, overload, and/or failure of the drive.

The lower the backlash more precise the motion of the drive.

This low backlash is the special feature in SMD Gearbox. SMD Harmonic gearbox have backlash as low as 10 arc-sec. SMD hollow Rotary Gearbox has 30 arc-sec backlash and SMD Planetary Gearbox, Right angle, Cycloidal Gearbox have backlash 1 arc min
