Great piece Justin. The “art” of some of those older maps is gone now. Mobile performance may have killed it in Google Map’s design but your subtle additions certainly added clarity and usefulness to the “information product” as Roger Tomlinson would call it.

I just finished my first three part story on Medium and I realize as I read yours (like mine) the experience (like you mention ref Google Maps) is really optimized for Mobile. Medium stories might not all be long, but they all are “Tall”. I have these two great side by side desktop monitors (about 18 3/4" wide) but my reading experience is limited to about 8". That’s about 43% of the available space.

Wouldn’t it be great if the app and data underlying the client device realized what is was being displayed on? The map experience (and perhaps route planning for example) could be more “robust” on the desktop and then when I send it to my phone I can tolerate a little less data.
