We want action photos that are applicable to the news story we are writing
3 Sources of information:
People: who do I need to talk to? What questions do I need to ask?
- Recording an interview:
Pros: accuracy, don’t miss anything, interview flows better
Cons: time consuming, subject will be guarded, it could be distracting, we can become dependent on it, technology can fail us - Consider legality and ethics when interviewing a person
Just because something is legal does not mean it is ethical - Record on a case by case basis
- Always take good notes in addition to using technology
Note taking:
- Always write down name (ask for spelling), job title, date, time, and location
- Know where you notes are; attempt to be organized
- Types of interviews:
In person- more probing questions, develop trust and relationship, nonverbals, tone, context, nonverbals
E-mail- written word, no nonverbals, no tone, no context, accurate quotes, polished answers
Phone- second best type of interview, ask probing questions and have follow ups, personal interactions, no nonverbals, face-to-face
Social Media- verification of the account, look over profile (look through friends, news feed, etc.), see if you can find information elsewhere, BE THOROUGH
