When you lose family members in this way, with no death certificates, funerals, or grave markers, it can feel as if they have simply been wiped off the face of the earth, as if they never existed.

Thank you for this post. When I read The Lost, what struck me most was the search for people who were not just murdered, but wiped away as if they had never had a thought or dream, or even breathed an atom of air. This effect made the search for them all the more compelling — and heartbreaking.
