I had a Windows PC and a Linux laptop with Outlook and Thunderbird installed on them respectively. Recently, I needed all of my emails from Outlook in Thunderbird because I was selling my PC; It had become outdated.

The problem was that the Outlook emails were stored locally, not on servers. And I couldn’t sync them to servers to sync back to Thunderbird because of the total enormous size. It was a terrible situation. I had no idea the problem was that the Outlook emails were stored locally, not on servers. So I archived everything to PST files, which was useless since Thunderbird doesn’t import PST files.

I also couldn’t sync them to servers to sync back to Thunderbird because of the total enormous size of my data. It would take a whole day and some more to sync them through email account. And it’s not even a reliable way to migrate data because of all the data loss that could happen every time a connection would terminate during the syncing.

Upon my relentless search for a effective solution, I found “PST Extractor Pro”. It is a tool for Mac that converts PST files to Thunderbird compatible files.

PST Extractor Pro — Convert Microsoft Outlook (PST) to Thunderbird, Entourage, Apple Mail, Postbox, MBOX, RGE & EML file format. (Migrate emails, contacts, calendars)

I had so many doubts before using the tool. Will it be able to preserve my folder hierarchy? What about the text in Chinese language? Will it be able to handle the large size and quantity of PST files? How difficult will it be to use the tool?

Within first minute after the installation, one of my doubts was cleared. The tool was very easy to use. The interface was extremely simple and yet functional and flexible. The features of “PST Extractor Pro” were easy to understand and apply.

As I went further in my journey, rest of the doubts also kept clearing up. What I found most pleasing was that it allowed loading multiple PST files and converting all of them to Thunderbird in one batch. Doing so didn’t hang the tool or crashed it as I was expecting.

After the conversion was finished surprisingly quickly, was the chance to clear the most important doubt — How accurate the conversion was, my concerns about losing folder hierarchy and non-English text. As it turned out, the conversion was thorough. Not a single data loss or corruption of information.
