Beloved Franchise Reimagined for a New Generation of Fans

Singapore, May 9 — Smobler, a next-generation game studio and digital architect headquartered in Singapore, is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with WildBrain, a global leader in kids’ and family entertainment, to bring the iconic Teletubbies into the Metaverse with the launch of Teletubbies: Custard Chaos on The Sandbox, a leading gaming and social platform.

Teletubbies is a truly distinctive brand — the colourful quartet broke boundaries when the content first launched in 1997 by speaking directly to kids in their language, using words and childlike mannerisms that reflect their own development. The popularity of the series continues today, allowing children to learn and grow with the Teletubbies in such a joyful way which builds a deep connection with its young audience.

Since its debut, the BAFTA-winning series has continued to build a connection with its fandom and make an indelible mark on pop culture, with a global fanbase spanning generations. The playful, fun and offbeat nature of the brand, as well as its nostalgic appeal, has resonated with Gen Z and Millennials on digital platforms such as Tik Tok and Instagram, where the brand has over 3M global followers. Today, as part of its strategy to innovate and meet fans where they are, WildBrain is expanding the world of Teletubbies through licensing partnerships, experiential events, and immersive content — with this bold new interactive game in the Metaverse.

Melissa Goodrich, Director, Franchise Management, at WildBrain, said, “Teletubbies has huge cross-generational appeal, and we’re excited to introduce our colorful quartet to a new digital audience on The Sandbox. Smobler’s track record of creating high-quality games for family-friendly IPs is unparalleled, and the game so perfectly captures the playful, whimsical, and joyful nature of our beloved Teletubbies.”

Smobler, in turn, is no stranger to transforming legacy brands into interactive, story-driven experiences. The company is at the forefront of digital innovation, with a portfolio spanning Playground@UXC with Singapore Polytechnic and Let’s Celebrate 2024 interactive game for Singapore’s national media network, Mediacorp.

The studio also works closely with governments, institutions, and industry leaders to deliver cutting-edge, family-friendly digital experiences. These include Bhutanverse, developed for the Kingdom of Bhutan; A11yverse, the world’s first disability-led accessibility park; and Equalverse, an equestrian-themed Roblox game empowering differently abled youths in collaboration with leading telco StarHub. This strong track record of meaningful and culturally significant creations made Smobler a natural partner for WildBrain’s digital expansion of Teletubbies.

“At Smobler, we believe in the power of joy, nostalgia, and meaningful play. Creating the first-ever Teletubbies game on The Sandbox is not only a creative milestone but also a cultural moment. WildBrain entrusted us with this iconic IP because we honor the brand’s legacy while reimagining it for a new generation of digital natives. With our track record in Web3 storytelling and world-building, we’re not just making a game — we’re building a wonderland where childhood meets the Metaverse,” says Loretta Chen, Founder and CEO of Smobler.

In Teletubbies: Custard Chaos, fans are invited to step into a vivid reimagining of Teletubbyland on a custard-fuelled quest to uncover what went wrong with the Tubby Custard Machine. Reminiscent of the original series, where endless bowls of pink, gooey custard led to mischief and laughter, the game turns this nostalgic treat into the heart of a whimsical adventure where fans solve quirky puzzles, explore hidden zones, and restore order before the custard chaos takes over.

Head of Studio, Rafaela Rizzi, adds, “We drew inspiration from the show’s beloved visuals and vibrant setting thus preserving its signature atmosphere, including the Tubbytronic Superdome, Noo-Noo, and the Voice Trumpets. Creating a nostalgic yet modern experience was the intention, but the teams had great fun expanding the Teletubbies universe based on existing elements. Over half of the map is dedicated to a larger-than-life version of the Tubby Custard machine, designed to make you feel like you are actually stepping into a magical Tubby Custard factory.”

“We’re excited to welcome Teletubbies to The Sandbox and see its playful Teletubbies: Custard Chaos experience bring enchantment to fans both new and old,” said Sebastien Borget, COO & Co-Founder of The Sandbox. “Players will be immersed in the world of Teletubbies and embark on exciting new adventures alongside its iconic cast while unleashing their creativity to make their own games inspired by this beloved brand.”

Teletubbies: Custard Chaos is one of the featured experiences in The Sandbox’s Alpha Season 5, a six-week season of new games, social experiences, and gamified worlds to explore, featuring immersive experiences in partnership with beloved brands and curated community-created content. Teletubbies: Custard Chaos is available to play in The Sandbox here.

For Smobler, this launch is more than just a game; it is a landmark moment in its ongoing mission to bring iconic IPs into the Metaverse through experiences that are equal parts entertaining, culturally resonant, and proving that digital spaces can be imaginative, meaningful, and full of heart.
