Kolvi Caves and Market Place — Stories from Jhalawar Rajasthan

This picture was taken from the Kolvi caves. In southern Rajasthan, the landscape is rugged, yet fertile and hospitable. The land dries during the hot summer, before the monsoon season arrives and brings out the hidden luscious green, as seen here.

Green and red chillies and spices galore! Getting used to their use as ingredients in the cuisine here has been a (mostly welcome) challenge for some of our stomachs, but they are an essential part of the cooking here, and Rajasthani dishes would be nothing without them! All were for sale at the main market in Jhalawar, which provides townsfolk with many of their basic goods.

A not-so-welcome visitor to the market was this curious cow, whose inquisitive nose had led her here. To our amusement and the market vendors’ annoyance, she was able to sneakily steal the odd potato or two.
