Nestled on the grounds of the former Canoga Park Fire Station, the Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Society serves as a repository for items that illuminate the history of the San Fernando Valley. Among their treasures are historical documents, pamphlets, photographs, and ephemera sourced from local organizations. An upcoming highlight in their calendar is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a significant event with a particular connection to the area. During the early 1900s, Canoga Park was home to various aerospace firms, including Rocketdyne, which played a pivotal role in the Space Shuttle program. Residents of that era could even hear the thunderous engine tests of Apollo rockets as they journeyed through the skies.

In the early 1900s, the region’s primary crops were wheat, walnuts, and citrus. The introduction of an aqueduct in 1913 bolstered agricultural activity. This thriving community boasted a high school, library, and a distinctive water tower. In 1916, it was annexed by Los Angeles and christened Canoga, later receiving the moniker Canoga Park in 1917. Eventually, the name was altered to West Hills in 1988.

The Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Museum boasts an impressive collection that commemorates the area’s railroad stop. Their materials span the first half of the 20th century and are on display at the Canoga Park Community Center, originally the oldest fire station in Canoga Park. The museum warmly welcomes visitors on the second Sunday of each month, operating from noon to 4 p.m., though it’s advisable to check for any potential variations in hours and exhibits.

Beyond their permanent displays, the historical society organizes social events and plays host to speakers and films that delve into the area’s storied past. A tour of the former fire station is also an option. Parking options around the area are available, with the nearest lot situated at 7236 Owensmouth Avenue.

The Canoga-Owensmouth Museum, located in Canoga Park, offers a petite yet intriguing assortment of artifacts and historical insights. Notably, it’s open to the public at no cost, and its website serves as an informative resource for those eager to explore the region’s history. The website even provides a helpful map to pinpoint the museum’s location. Its regular open days are the second and fourth Sundays of each month. In addition to the museum, the area boasts a variety of attractions, including the Canoga Park Farmer’s Market and 8one8 Brewing, where visitors can partake in tours and sample locally crafted beers. An assortment of restaurants and cafes further enhances the neighborhood’s charm.
