I disagree with Coates and agree with your original writing on that hashtag, simply because I think having low expectations of irrationality from people of a certain group is another dark road to go on. Marginalized people are *people*, and hence have the resultant responsibilities of civility/pro-social behavior that must come along with rights. There are no rights without responsibility not to shatter the society that gives those rights, because the truth is that rights don’t exist without a society to back them (think Mad Max).
Also, the key component of how social justice bullies justify their actions is that they point to a threat that they supposedly need to suspend the normal rules of conduct to combat (just like any other authoritarian movement historically whether communist or fascist, alt-right included with their white genocide hallucination). This should tell you that maintaining that standard of conduct, and speaking out against those that defect from the prisoner’s dilemma of civility, whether that’s Trump or his opponents, is the most important thing. Ideologues on both sides froth at the mouth to suspend the normal rules. For that reason their importance cannot be overstated. You even allude to it with rape accusations and the standard of due process.
Finally, and I know this is a controversial opinion, but Trump is an empty scarecrow of a boogeyman. He’s not *good*, mind you, he’s simply worthlessly inept and will probably become a Taft-like lame duck figure in history (thankfully). Every single one of his objectives he has failed at, mostly due to establishment politicians knowing how to slow the state, not the social justice bullies simply using it as an excuse to torch the normal rules of society. Trump is no excuse to break even a single rule of conduct, especially now that Bannon is gone and the neocon establishment has wrangled Trump’s agenda towards “normal” territory. I predict another term of basically Bush-like presidency, before the pendulum swing in 2020 (if the left can drop the bullies, if not who knows).
