This had me choking up, Ms. Leygerman to realize just how far we’ve come. I’ve raised daughters who marched and voted against dumb, hateful Drumpf and who themselves feel that they are so very close to being equal. I hate to disagree.
They don’t see how we’ve had the leash let out on us but are still tethered. It’s 2018 and we’re close to losing the rights to have an abortion and already in many states, for poor women especially - abortions have not been available for years.
Abortionists (or Doctors who provide women with humane abortions) have been targeted for violence. They’ve been murdered by these ‘life at any cost’ nut-jobs. Had their families threatened. My daughters don’t understand what it’s like, what illegal abortions were like.
But I do. My Mother and her Mother did. The horror of it all still takes me back to procedures done in the back of barbershops and in people’s kitchens. They feel pretty darn free and determined to stay that way. But they don’t see that the fight is not won at all. They are middle class, educated and live in San Francisco. What can they know.
They can’t see it. It doesn’t matter what I say they think if they avoid marriage or other committed relationships with male partners that no one will be able to tell them what to do. I’ve sent them both this wonderful article by you and hope they’ll read it carefully. Yr words will get through more than mine ever did:)
I personally do not believe we’ll ever be free or equal. I think that we’re allowed to have a little room to express ourselves, to plan our lives but in the end it’s up to the males to make the decisions. I may be a bit paranoid but I’ve seen a great deal in my 65 yrs.
Thank you for this well spoken summation of where we are now. All of us must draw together. We really have to. Sisters! Yes:) I can’t stand the women who say women’s lib is a done deal…no longer germane to our lives. Nonsense. That’s utter rubbish.
