Some thoughts on (un)productivity

Yesterday you went to bed with determination to change your life starting the next morning. You thought of so many different things you wanted to accomplish, a person you would become after that night. You imagined yourself lifting weights at the gym, jogging early in the morning, working really hard at work or on your start-up, learning for your exams. Everything seemed perfect, just like it was some kind of fairytale, except it was YOUR life (starting tomorrow, of course). And then you fell asleep having set up the alarm for 6am.

You wake up precisely at 6am, eat healthy breakfast, put your clothes on and hit the gym. After an hour of exercising you’re ready to start working with a smile on your face. You’re super productive, so you’re free to go back home a few hours earlier. Again, a healthy meal with low fat meat and lots of vegetables. After that you sit at your desk and learn Finnish (yes, it has been your dream for a long time). After that you start reading a book you’ve always wanted to read. And then you go to bed at 11pm, because you want to start the next morning at 6am as well.

Right?

WRONG!

Why? Because as soon as your alarm wakes you up, you press the ‘snooze’ button a couple of times. When you finally leave your bed, you’re either in a hurry (because you work hard to make money, which will enable fulfilling your dreams) or you think to yourself “Ok, I WILL hit the gym, BUT before that I have to eat breakfast”. When you’re done you can’t exercise for some time, because so much food in your stomache might make you sick while moving your body intensively. So you decide to drink a cup of coffee and read the news, some blogs, watch stupid movies on youtube (because you really need to know what some girl you don’t even know decided to wear that day, and your life will have much more meaning once you have that kind of knowledge) or start that never-ending process of scrolling and gazing at memes with cats. After an hour or so you remember you have that really important exam on Thursday, so you CAN’T hit the gym, because you have to be studying. So what do you do? You make a cup of tea, get back to your computer, open all the files you need and look through them. After you’ve faced the devil you’re ready to take a quick break and check facebook. You check your e-mail, twitter, instagram, pinterest, tumblr as well. Then you decide to try out that new game you downloaded last night — Candy Blitz. And you’ll play it only for 5 minutes. You get back to the real world once you have completed nearly 50 levels because your stomache starts making some really weird noises that annoy you. You glance through the window — it’s already dark and besides, it’s so cold outside. It would be better to leave your exercising plans for tomorrow. You eat whatever is in the fridge. Now you’re ready to study. You look at the first page, read the first sentence and suddenly something unexplainable happens. You’re starting to feel more and more sleepy. When you get to the bottom of the page, you’ve yawned like a hundred times and you don’t even remember what you’ve just read. So, obviously, it’s a good idea to go to bed so that you could be more productive the following day. And you do that as soon as you complete some more levels on Candy Blitz.
