What is Marketing Automation?

Marketing automation is a concept familiar to some, but quite foreign to others. Up until a few months ago, I knew nothing about marketing automation; I had never even heard the term. However, I quickly became exposed and learned just how important it is, especially in today’s digital world.

Before I learned what automation does for a business, I thought social media marketers and managers updated each companies social media profiles manually. I soon realized this was not the case, and that marketing automation makes social media planning and management simple and organized.

The first automation tool I was introduced to was Hootsuite. I was able to gain basic knowledge about the functions and benefits automation has to offer. But I also learned what to look for and what to avoid when looking for an automation tool for a business or brand.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite is a well-known and widely used social media management tool. It has over 10 million users and used in every country in the world. With numbers like that, it is easy to see why so many people are turning to Hootsuite for social media planning needs.

Hootsuite allows users to manage all social media accounts in one central dashboard making all accounts easy to find and manage. Rather than logging on to each individual account to make an update, users can make updates directly from Hootsuite and tailor messages for each specific account. Users can also monitor followers, mentions, tags, hashtags, check-ins and much more.

Users can also plan content ahead of time by scheduling posts through the Hootsuite dashboard which the tool then sends out the post on its designated date. Once it is put into the schedule, the user does not have to worry about it again, unless they want to make edits.

Along with scheduling and planning, Hootsuite provides users with real-time social media analytics that reveals how well content is doing with its audience. It tracks engagements, impressions, likes, comments and more. This makes it easy for businesses to see which ads and strategies are working and which ones are not. This also allows them to make better decisions in the future and continue to improve its brand image and revenue.

Finally, there are many versions of Hootsuite that makes it easy for users to pick which one best suits a business. The plans include free, professional, team, business and enterprise. Each plan has different features, benefits and is best suited for a different type of business. Once a user finds which is best for them and their business, they can get started!

Story Time

When I was first exposed to Hootsuite, it was through a friend, Natalie, who was the Social Media Intern for Marycrest, one of the dining halls at the University of Dayton. She managed the Twitter and Instagram accounts while coming up with fun content to keep students interested and engaged.

As a student, it can be hard to balance schoolwork and a job, but Natalie was able to do both with the help of Hootsuite. Her favorite feature was the scheduling feature,

“…I had to continually create content about food and events, and Hootsuite made it easy to schedule tweets minutes, hours or even days ahead of time.”

By having the flexibility to schedule content ahead of time, Natalie was able to spend more time on creating creative and quality content. Natalie also enjoyed using Hootsuite’s dashboard. Being able to manage multiple Twitter accounts from one place made her job so much easier and efficient.

Even though Natalie only had access to the free version of Hootsuite, she was able to make the most of it and really embrace everything it had to offer.

I was able to learn and experience Hootsuite through another friend, Erin, as well. Erin is currently a Social Media Specialist at the University of Dayton. She creates and manages content for Dayton’s official Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram accounts, as well as the Twitter account for the official Dayton Magazine. This social media management and creation include live tweeting, editing and publishing Instagram posts five times a week, creating new photo albums on Facebook and posting weekly videos and photos on Snapchat. Because she has to manage multiple accounts on so many different platforms, Erin utilizes Hootsuite to help her manage her time and alleviate the stress of having multiple accounts to keep track of.

Erin’s favorite feature was the layout. She loves “how you can have multiple tabs open and you can look at your retweet, favorites, mentions all at…the same time.”

Having a central dashboard to manage multiple accounts makes it easier to get work done efficiently. Users no longer have to switch from account to account; they can post and manage content all from one Hootsuite account.

Another feature Erin likes about Hootsuite is the ability to search hashtags and other posts while monitoring events. Being a social media specialist on a college campus means there are hundreds of organizations wanting to be highlighted on social media and get their messages and images out there. Because of this, there are always multiple events on campus, Snapchat takeovers, Instagram contests, etc. Sometimes there are multiple events happening at once, so if Erin wants to monitor what is happening at each one, Hootsuite makes it easy for her to see what is doing well on social media and what needs more attention.

Hootsuite clearly has multiple beneficial features useful in any setting. However, there are other automation tools offering benefits that Hootsuite does not.

PowerPost

I recently started my first full-time job this past May since graduating from the University of Dayton. As a Client Success Coordinator at PowerPost, I have been exposed to the Powerpost tool and everything that it does for clients and brands.

PowerPost is a content publishing tool that allows companies to easily create, schedule and publish content, not only on their social media sites but on websites as well. This is something that really makes PowerPost stand out from a lot of other marketing automation tools; most of them only allow you to post to social media platforms.

With Powerpost, users can publish content up to a year in advance and tailor each message to specific platforms, all within the tool. Along with the importance of having interactive and engaging social media posts, blogs are also an important and fun way businesses can connect with audiences and give them the content they want.

With the PowerPost tool, businesses are able to schedule blog posts straight to WordPress, being the first tool to do so!

PowerPost also has an advanced content library where users can upload content for future posts and see content from past posts.

Another feature that makes PowerPost stand out against competitors is its team feature. This allows users to collaborate with other team members for edits, feedback and content creation, rather than doing it by themselves. It always helps to have multiple perspectives, and this feature helps users perfect content before publishing.

With the PowerPost 2.0 release, there are new features that continue to give companies the ability to be and become better power publishers and take control over their content.
