We love our dishwashers and why not? It is a smart kitchen appliance which cleans us dishes, saves water, detergent as well as does not suck up a lot of electricity. However, do you know a dishwasher is not friendly towards every utensil in your kitchen? Hence, here is our guide to utensils that you must keep away from your dishwasher to avoid any damage.

Cheese Grater

We love cheese and adding the same to our food. Hence, cheese grater is a very common utensil in every kitchen. However, after grating cheese, a lot of product is found stuck to the body of the cheese grater. Thinking of cleaning it? Of course, you can put it in the dishwasher; however, chances are high (very high indeed) that by the end of the cycle you’ll find a lot of stuff stuck to the body and this can also make it susceptible to rust. Hence, take our advice and skip putting this utensil in your dishwasher. It just takes a minute to wash it manually.

Chefs Knives

What’s the point of keeping a chef’s knives or other knives in your kitchen if they lose the sharpness? Thus, to maintain the sharpness of your knives do not put them in the dishwasher. Things get utterly bashed in there and this action leads to the blunt edges. And if you have been doing this, then stop right away! Washing knives using your hand hardly takes some time, hence make use of your muscular power.

Copper Pans

Those shiny copper pans in your kitchen in which you cook some delicious food, stop putting them in your genius dishwasher. Putting them in the dishwasher makes them lose their shine, doubled up by discolouration. Hence, your hands are your best friends here.

Your Vintage Crockery

Do you have a beautiful set of vintage plates and cups with gorgeous designs which you probably came across during a hunting session in an antique shop? We love retro beauties and would love to preserve it. Hence, do not put them in your dishwasher. The patterns will be lost with time, thereby turning those cups and plates into a plain white set of crockery. The same applies to any glasses with design on them.

Dirty Plates

Well, of course, you’ll put dirty plates in the dishwasher because that what a dishwasher has been made for. However, if there happen to be some chunky food particles on the plate, just give it a light rinse before putting it in. Why so? Simply to avoid those chunks of food particles to swish around during the cleaning session as this might end up clogging up the filter as well.

Garlic Press

Remember what we had pointed out while talking about a cheese grater? The same applies to the garlic press and believe us or not, it will not come out squeaky clean. Hence, you better give a nice scrub with a dishwasher brush at the sink. However, if you at all wish to put it in the dishwasher, make sure to perform the previous step and throw it in for a final cleansing session.

Insulated Mug or Flask

Not all insulated mugs or flasks are dishwasher friendly; hence until and unless it clearly says dishwasher safe do not throw them in. Doing so will break the seal and it will become useless.

Jam Jars

Next comes the jam jars or anything with a paper label on it, ‘Do Not’ put them in the dishwasher. The label will come off and clog the filter. However, once your jar is free of the sticky label you can put in the dishwasher to sterilize the jars.

Measuring Jug

We love those measuring mugs with specified quantity marked on them as it is a handy way to achieve the right amount of liquid food items for consuming or adding to any recipe. Thinking of running them through a dishwasher? Do so often and those marks will become a faded story altogether.

Non-Stick Pans

Sorry, but if this came to you as a shock, remember we are trying to save your money and future heartbreak. Those non-stick pans are lovely; however, they will not remain non-stick anymore if you run those pans through your Holy Grail dishwasher. Have you already done this? Then stop it right away!

Wooden Spoons and Chopping Boards

Lastly, stop putting all your classy wooden utensils like spoon and chopping board in the dishwasher. It will dry them out leading to split and twist. Hence, just wash them with your hands.

That was our list of stuff that you should not put in your dishwasher. You might just hate us now because that is one long list, some of which may be you have already put. However, to avoid any unnecessary damage or breakage, just stop your habit of putting every piece of utensil in the dishwasher.
