India is rapidly growing into that country where it is acceptable to use food processors at home to ease the burden of cooking. Despite being a patriarchal society, it has undoubtedly come a long way in accepting the fact that women don’t need to cook every meal from scratch. They don’t need to mill their own flour, or grind their own spices; they can use processed food such as cut vegetables, pre-cooked rice, and half cooked chapatis; and use food processor to cut, slice, peel, knead, mash, mix, and grind for them.

Food processors are one of the most useful inventions ever perfected by mankind. They not only make cooking easy, but also allow one to have healthy home cooked meals, if not every day, at least more often. They perform all the repetitive tasks which are a pre-requisite for any tasty meal such as chopping vegetables, kneading the dough, mixing the batter, and other things.

A brief history of Food processors:

In 1971, Pierre Verdon, a French salesman working with a catering company, designed, what he called Le Magi-Mix. It was the first version of an electronic counter-top Food processor which could chop vegetables, grind spices, and blend purees. The contraption was a scaled down version of Robot-Coupe, a food processor which Pierre had designed for his restaurant. The machine was an instant hit all over Europe as it made life much easier for people.

Later in the year, a French born American engineer named Carl Sontheimer, discovered Le Magi-Mix in a trade show. He wanted to bring this gadget back home to his countrymen who were still kneading the pastry dough with their hands. He re-branded and named the product Cuisinart. Although the American population was a little slow to trust this strange looking blender, once it was validated by the famous chefs of the time, its integration into peoples’ homes was a piece of cake.

How do Food processors work?

Food processors are different from regular blenders. They consist of wider bowls with blades placed at separate levels. Unlike blenders they don’t thrust all the ingredients at the center to create a whirlpool while mixing. They also don’t require addition of more liquid to assist in blending the dry foods. Blenders also tend to overflow because of their downwards-tapering design. In food processors, however, the width of the bowl accommodates large batches of food ingredients.

Food processors also come with a variety of blades which enable grating, chopping, dough mixing, and more. Though one can use separate and cheaper tools for each of these functions, the whole idea behind the conception of food processors is to eliminate the other devices.

What are the different types of Food processors?

The term Food processor is actually a bigger umbrella which includes all other sorts of devices such as choppers, grinders, blender, graters, juicer, mixer, etc because they all cut and chop and mash and mix the larger pieces of food into smaller processed ones.

However, we have divided the modern food processors into 3 types based on their mode of operation and size.

Hand operated-

As the name suggests these food processors are operated manually and do not require electricity to run. This gives them the advantage of being useful regardless of power supply. However, it also limits their function as only so much physical force and effort can be applied by the user. Even though some designs are equipped with several separate attachments for grating, squeezing, chopping, kneading etc.

Despite these disadvantages, people prefer to buy hand operated food processors as they are cheaper and easier to clean and assemble, and don’t require large storage space.

Mini food processor-

Mini food processors are in most ways similar to hand-operated processors, except for the fact that they are motorized and are much easier to use. Also, unlike manual processors they can be used for rigorous mixing and mashing of food. They also don’t require a large storage space and are easier to operate.

Full sized-

A full sized food processor comes with several separate attachments such as different blades for kneading, grating, mixing, cutting, chopping, shredding, etc. They have a more powerful motor and a wider bowl. They are also more durable and can be used for a longer period of time. Professional chefs and restaurants use full sized food processors to make their work easier.

Food processors have definitely made life easier for chefs and people who love to cook. And by helping in reducing the preparation time of meals they allow people to have more time and energy.
