4 Embarrassing Mistakes I’ve Made On Social Media

I’ll be the first to admit, my early years as a Social Media Manager weren’t perfect. It took me years of experience and lots of research to realize that the mistakes I made were ruining all of my hard work.

That being said, mistakes are bound to happen, it’s part of the job. However, what lessons you learn from them, and how those lessons are implemented is what will set you apart. Here’s a look at the mistakes I made as a rookie Social Media Manager.

Inconsistency

How often you should be posting on social media is often debated. Some argue twice a day, others say once a day but, what isn’t debated on is consistency. Whether you choose to post 5 times a week or 25 times, the most important thing is showing up and staying consistent. In my early days as a social media manager, I would post when it was convenient for me. This led to a very inconsistent schedule that affected my performance in the long run.

Forgot to Proof-Read Content

The horror of spelling a word wrong in an email or ad campaign still gives me nightmares. Take it from me, it’s worth spending a little extra time going over your work or even having someone proof your content before it goes out.

Not Tracking Insights

This was a big one. For some reason, I just never did it. I would check my insights from time to time but never wrote them down or analyzed the data. This made it difficult for me to determine what strategies were working or which ones needed tweaking. Now looking back at it I realize how much easier my life would have been if I had just tracked my insights!

Posting and Ghosting

Social media is a two-way street and should be treated as such. In my early years using social media I found myself ‘posting and ghosting’. Followers would drop a comment under a post or share it on their story and I would rarely reply or interact. I quickly learned that this was a big no-no. The heart of social media is interacting with others and if you’re actively trying to grow your following you need to go the extra mile to engage with your audience
