Ok, let’s not go anal with SEO
I’ve been getting a lot of rather “technical” queries on SEO recently — and I’d like people to ease up a little. The world will not end if you don’t have great SEO. There, I’ve said it. Here are three signs that you’re overdoing it:
Spreading the Link Juice
I kid you not. There is an actual blog post on this topic. And it explains how you can “spread the link juice” across your website by interlinking specific terms on various article. The article talks about “anchor text” and “link placement”, and even “linking to objects” so that links don’t break.Ok, enough, if you’ve reached this stage, you should be taking a break.
Keywordify
This is another one. I once found this description of an app in the Android store (that’s technically part of ASO or App Store Optimization) that had nothing except three words, over and over again, in capitals and in small letters. If your app is called XYZ and the app gives users song lyrics, you should not write a description that reads “song Lyrics, SONG lyrics, SoNG lyrics, Lyrics sOng…”I understand keywords are important, but not at the cost of making sense.
Fishing for clicks with Linkbait
This involves writing non-sensical headlines just to get people to click on it. Obviously, no writer wants to call their article on crowdfunding, “An article on crowdfunding” — but there’s no reason to call it “Yippy Yahoo — What happens when thousands of women come together”.
I read this article on Linkedin titled “Ten signs that you’re working too hard”. Well, this is “3 signs that you’re overthinking SEO”
