There is another interesting factor here that can help mitigate dissipation and forestall the return of junk food cravings – palate sensitivity regained through fasting. After 9 days or more of fasting the palate regains full sensitivity and upon re-feeding actually abhors unnaturally seasoned, salty and sweet foods. And if one obeys the palate with food behaviors aligned to supporting such heightened sensitivity, then adherence to better food habits can be completely restored. At this point the challenge is more a social and food culture issue than physiological response.
