I love myself, now I am free.

There’s a song I used to listen to on repeat when I was 18. When you and I were together, and it said,

So it’s true what they say
If you love someone, you should set them free

And I took it to heart, when you broke my heart. I told myself, “Set him free because you love him. Set him free because he doesn’t love you.”

You were my first, and I was your virgin. I am the face that flashes in your mind every time you lay a new girl down, whispering in their ear. “Have you done this before?”

Not because you care to hear the answer, you only need to soothe your soul. Reassure yourself that I am not a sin you will commit twice.

I was the best you’ll ever have. Never again will you stumble across a love as pure and naive as what I had for you. I was too young and you were too old.

There is a song that I listen to on repeat, now that I am 21. You and I are no longer together, and it says,

So it’s true what they say
If you love someone, you should set them free

Now I am free, I set myself free.
