How to Do Standups Right as a Jr Dev

Being a junior developer is overwhelming. There is so much to learn that everyday processes are often overlooked. For a while, I didn’t understand the purpose of standups or how to do them correctly. I want to share what I’ve learned so you can make the most out of them.

What are standups?

Agile standups should be short daily meetings typically held in the morning. The purpose of the meeting is to help keep the team on track towards the sprint goals and ensure that everyone is aware of what everyone else is working on.

How to do standups right

  1. Make sure you are prepared before the meeting. Be ready to talk about what you worked on yesterday, what you are working on today, and any blockers you might have.
  2. Be an active listener during the standup. Pay attention to what your teammates are saying, see if there are any conflicts with your work, and offer help if you can.
  3. Keep your updates brief and to the point. These meetings should be short and concise. If there are longer discussion points, offer to take them outside the standup.
  4. Ask questions if you need clarification on anything. Standups are a time for everyone to be on the same page, so…
