7 Old School Thoughts to Get Rid of Now
We live in a very progressive culture. In fact, I would argue that my generation is hyper-sensitive. It is bringing to light some issues that have long needed to be addressed, but there’s just some things that people can’t seem to wrap their head around.
1. Tattoos mean you have questionable morals.
Tattoos seem to be the biggest taboo, especially when it comes to jobs. They are considered as negative as a DUI or a criminal record in the job world. Many people today of all ages have tattoos. They are tributes to loved ones who have past on; they are forms of art; they are a symbol of triumph in hard times. Yes, sometimes people make a drunken decision and get something dumb or provocative. However, that’s the minority. Let’s move on, shall we?
2. Women who don’t marry are wasting their lives or they’re a lesbian.
Essentially, this line of thought can be translated to, “Women who don’t have a man are a waste”. Harsh, but true. I remember it seemed to be a shock when I was growing up if a woman didn’t have a marriage potential by 25. It’s still stressful today for many women, including most of my friends who still have awhile before 25. I know many a woman who did not marry and live with no regrets. Blasphemy, I know. Let women be and stop guessing sexual orientation when it’s none of your business.
3. Stay-at-home mothers lay around all day.
I’m sure any stay-at-home mom who’s reading this is probably just laying poolside, sipping a martini in all her spare time. AS IF. Correction: I bet any stay-at-home mom who’s reading this is probably wishing she was laying poolside, sipping a martini. In fact, she probably can’t remember the last time she had a spare moment to herself. Usually, if you’re making the above statement you’re either a) not a mother or b) if you are, you’re not spending enough time at home. I’ll get the ice.
4. Men should be the bread-winners.
Why is this still a thought? In the time of #GIRLBOSS and more women graduating from college than men, we should be past this theory. Mostly, this old school thought comes from many men. I think it has good intentions; they want to take care of their family. But it’s fine if a man has a lower paying job and the woman is a high-powered business woman. As long as everyone loves what they do and does it well, no harm, no foul.
5. Only schizoids go to therapy.
We are quickly coming into the era of psychological enlightenment. Therapy is a place to work out your thoughts and feelings, especially during those hard times. It can even be a place where you can openly complain about anything and get real feedback without worrying about hurting someone’s feelings or all your dirty laundry being aired. It takes a certain amount of humility for someone to walk into therapy to better themselves. They won’t put you in a straight jacket, pinky promise (unless you deserve it).
6. Teenagers are incapable of understanding “adult” situations.
I could go on a whole separate tangent just on this topic. It amazes me how many adults believe that teenagers are too ignorant to grasp highly-charged situations, while claiming “I remember when I was a teenager”. Do you? Because if you did, you probably remember understanding way too much and having a powerful emotional radar. Don’t underestimate teenagers. Assuming their ignorance to “protect them” only breeds teens with self-esteem issues and teens who actually are ignorant.
7. Young people are unsuitable for higher company positions, even if they are more qualified.
I have run into this time and time again. Young people are great for high positions because they’re usually very teachable and super absorbent of the information they learn! Plus, those fresh out of college have just learned the latest techniques to help your business progress. In fact, if you take an inventory of the best businesses in the US, you’ll find many youngsters roaming their offices and working their way up quite quickly. Again, don’t underestimate the 20-somethings.
