A DC Engagement Proposal at the Newseum

Proposal Story | This weekend’s surprise engagement proposal in front of the Newseum in DC was amazing in so many ways: the unpredictable weather, the passing summer storm and a labradoodle on the front page of the Orlando Sentinel with one question to ask: “Will you marry us?”

Mike and Jadzia met at my alma mater, Georgetown University (Law School) a few years ago. He is in the Navy and she is a Florida transplant currently living and working in DC. When Mike’s sister contacted me about this brilliant idea and request, I was over the moon excited and happy to help out. Several days before the proposal, I talked to Mike via FaceTime to hear about his plan of action! He texted me throughout the day of the Proposal to keep me posted on what was happening. Were they going to take a taxi or walk? We had to be prepared for anything!

Mike had a personalized newspaper created for Jadzia in the Florida display case. They were meeting friends that night for drinks and their friends were “running late”. Even with the passing storm (which died down to just a sprinkle at the time of their arrival), M + J arrived on the scene to “make the headlines”. Jadzia immediately saw the cute photo of the black labradoodle and stopped to figure out what was actually going on…

Mike got down on one knee. And proposed. Jadzia was so surprised (as she had no idea what was actually taking place)! And guess what? Jadzia was elated! And she said YES! Many many times! Horns honked on Constitution Avenue and people who walked by started cheering. Everyone was so excited!

After the newly engaged couples had their moments, the museum staff came out with two glasses of champagne for Mike and Jadzia. They also gave us special access to the rooftop terrace to finish our portrait session. We enjoyed gorgeous views of the monuments and Capital building in the backdrop. By then the skies were clearing up and we had some gorgeous golden hour light to shoot with… (and yes, that makes us photographers SO very happy, you know!).

Congratulations to Mike and Jadzia on your Newseum engagement! We are so excited for you and wish you all the best as you plan the most important day of your life!
