The arbitrary and summary firing of people, for their opinions or even their mis-steps, is not compatible with the ideals of an open society. An internal code of conduct is no substitute for – and is subordinate to – the law of the land. There is a special irony in Pichai’s promise to hold an open discussion after firing the guy who so clearly articulated the opposition position.
