10 Things That Stink Up Your Home with Safe Solutions

That Stinky Garbage Can

If you are among the many people who suffer from stinky garbage, here’s what you can do. Take out the offending trash. Then tie two tablespoons of coffee in a coffee filter with clove. Drop that baby in the bottom of your trash can before replacing the bag.

Cooked Fish

If the smell you need to clear is the fish you cooked at lunch, do this. Try lighting an all natural soy or beeswax candle. If you need something a little stronger, boil water with baking soda and lemon peel to absorb remaining odor. You could also set a bowl of vinegar next to the stove.

Cooking Utensils and Dishes

If your pyrex dish has that baked on cheese smell, sprinkle it with salt. Let it sit for an hour or two before scrubbing the remaining funk.

The Dreaded Microwave

Cleaning your microwave can be as fun and educational as that volcano you made for the 6th grade science fair. Put two tablespoons of baking soda in with one cup water and microwave on high until it splatters everywhere! Or 2–3 minutes. Clean the remaining carnage with a rag for a great smelling microwave that’s like new.

Smelly Clothes

Add some baking soda or vinegar in your wash cycle to get rid of stink from smelly clothes. This can take the place of fragranced fabric beads that are full of unnatural compounds and chemicals.

Musty Basement or Other Rooms

If you have a mildew in your home and a room smells musty, try mixing a few drops of tea tree oil with cheap vodka and spraying it at anything that smells. Ready! Aim! Fire your way to better indoor air quality. Bonus points because tea tree oil smells good and is a natural way to kill mold.

Toilet Bowl That Needs A Boost

If your toilet bowl could use a scent boost, turn to vinegar. Pour a cup of vinegar in the bowl and flush for best results.

Smelly Litter Box

After dumping your smelly litter, you can use a mix of baking soda and vinegar. Fill the bottom of the box with a couple of inches of baking soda vinegar mix. Let it sit for a couple of hours. Then scrub for and wash with soapy water before drying and replacing litter.

General House Smells

Sometimes smells just happen. If you’ve ruled out that a smell isn’t indicative of a larger problem. Here are a couple of things you can do to eliminate smells from old pipes, funky HVAC or other sources undefined.

Kitty Litter Scent Trap

If you have clean cat litter lying around, you can make a scent trap with it. Use an old shoe box and fill it with cat litter. Then place it in stinky corners like in the bathroom or kitchen. Just make sure if you have a cat that your scent trap doesn’t become a toilet. You could also use charcoal for the same effect with less likelihood of tricking your cat.

Air Out the Home

If you have a scent that needs to go away try getting rid of it the old fashioned way. Open the windows! Proper ventilation in your home is an excellent, inexpensive and easy way to improve air quality fast.
