Narcissim in South Beach

Keeping in Shape for the Love of Self

South Beach is all about Narcissism. Why do you see people jogging, working out and playing sports on the beach? The love of self is what the beach is all about. As you lay on the beach, you watch the people walking and running by. Some of them are all oiled up and running with their water bottles. Others are just jogging in the sand and taking in the sun.

There are pick up beach volleyball games on the beach. In the afternoon, you can see people playing volleyball near 2nd Street in front of the Miami Beach Marriott.

As you walk on the boardwalk in South Point or the park next to Ocean Drive, you will run into numerous people running, walking, rollerblading and riding their bikes. People are playing tennis at Flamingo Park, playing basketball on the courts, soccer or baseball in the soccer and baseball fields.

You will not see as many people exercising in the neighboring towns like Kendall and Miami. I remember visiting friends in Kendall and I hardly saw people walking or running. Was it the heat? It was like seeing an empty city — only cars. You hardly saw people and if you did — they were either getting in or out of their cars.

Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne and even Pinecrest has its share of joggers and bicyclists. These areas are beautiful and draw people who like to stay fit. When you are driving down Bayshore Drive, you usually have to make room for the bicyclists who are in teams of 5 to 20 people.

South Beach is home to incredible number of gyms, pilates and yoga studios. Let’s see — there is Crunch, David Barton’s, South Beach, and Equinox. For yoga, you can do your practice at Green Monkey, Yoga Miami, and even on the beach near 2nd Street at 7 AM and 5 PM. Pilates can be practiced at a studio on Washington Avenue in South Point. You can find a number of gyms at the neighboring hotels such as the Standard with a yoga studio, spa and downstairs gym.

Tourists and residents in South Beach love to use their bicycles to get around. Now, you can rent a bicycle easily for an hour or more. You can pick up a bike on Lincoln Road and drop it off anywhere on the beach.

As you walk on the beach, the parade does not stop. It is understandable. What better way to exercise than on the beach, with the sun, wind and ocean as a backdrop. I have seen people running wearing all sorts of outfits. You see serious runners as well as people just starting to get in shape. They are huffing and puffing but you can tell that they are happy to be in this tropical paradise.

What more could they want? Young and old, everyone wants to be fit and look good. It is glitz and glamour from sunrise to sundown. Where else can you get $10 juices that keep you lean?
