To start I am neither for nor against a new American exodus to Canada. As a Canadian I feel there are a few things I should point out.
- In Canada no one has the RIGHT to bear arms. This has subsequently lead to statisticly fewer gun related deaths than the United States.
- We do have guaranteed rights, these are contained in: The Constitition Act (The British North America Act) — 1867; The Constitution Act Part 1 The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — 1982; As well as various amendments since the creation of Canada as an independent nation. These rights are similar to most of those in the United States; however, their are some limitations such as on free speech — hate speech is not protected.
- As an American citizen living in Canada you will be responsible to pay taxes to both Canada and the United States.
If you choose to come north do not come because you’re running from something, come because you want to run to something. Whether it’s our form of healthcare, a generally lower population density, a different world view, or just because you have seen and love my beautiful country as much as I do.
If you’re running away from Trump or something else I encourage you to stay and do your best to change it. If people do not stand in opposition to what they disagree with, the society they are leaving is left with only one view that, due to lack of internal opposition, is generally thought to be correct — no matter how flawed.
