A recent investigation has unveiled an intriguing link between coffee consumption and increased spending during shopping!

In a novel study, researchers established pop-up coffee stations at the entrances of stores in France and Spain. Customers were presented with the choice of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or water. Half of the shoppers opted for a caffeinated coffee containing approximately 100 mg of caffeine, while the remaining customers chose the safer alternatives of decaf or water. Upon leaving the stores, shoppers willingly shared their receipts with the researchers.

Surprisingly, those who indulged in caffeine ended up splurging 50% more and adding an extra 30% more items to their carts compared to their decaf counterparts.

Coffee enthusiasts also exhibited a penchant for purchasing non-essential items like candles and perfumes. Conversely, non-caffeinated shoppers adhered more closely to their pre-defined shopping lists upon entering the store.

Scientists attribute this phenomenon to caffeine’s potent stimulant properties, which elevate one’s energy levels, potentially intensifying impulsivity while reducing self-control.
