We’re one bunch of ungrateful creatures ;)
But being serious, I feel that nowadays there are depressions, melt downs, anxiety disorders at every corner. I know that there are people who really do have a problem and are simply sick, need treatment and help. But I feel that more and more people have breakdowns over things that blow my mind. I see three reasons for that:
- Lack of perspective.
- Parents that jump to their feet and freak out over the slightest emotional discomfort of their child.
- Internet.
As much as I wish my problems weren’t devalued so much when I was a kid, I appreciate that I’ve been given a solid shake a few times when I was whining over nothing. Lack of perspective is a plague in western world.
Parents — of course, react when you see your kid is in torment. But for christ sake, life is not all rainbows and patting on the shoulder. A reasonable amount of stress builds resilience, especially when a child has support.
And internet. Nothing is in the middle, stories that sell on social media and on TV, are either 1 or 0. We are shown extraordinary success stories but rarely how much failure, fall downs and hard work it takes to achieve them. Not everyone is willing to go through this path and it’s perfectly fine. But it doesn’t sell.
I can spot from the distance who really needs support and who decided to go through life as a victim, whining about how the whole world is against them. Those that need help don’t whine.
