Now this might be a boring one.

But it’s for those who are interested to venture and know more about the Medical Laboratory Science field (MLS / MED. LAB). So if this is something that you’d like then let’s dive in.

In Nigeria, once you are in year 3 in any state or federal university. You are going to be introduced fully to the knowledge of the basis of MedLab.

The session is divided into two;

1. First semester

2. Second semester

Each semester consist of 9 courses each with different credit loads. This may vary depending on the university.

I have decided to base my focus on the university called EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY (EBSU) which is rated as the ‘2nd’ best universities to study MLS in Nigeria as a whole of which I’m blessed to be in.

FIRST SEMESTER…

The courses are divided into Core, Auxiliary and GST Courses. They involve the following;

Core Courses

MLS 311 — Basic Chemical Pathology 3

MLS 321 — Basic Haematology. 3

MLS 331 — Basic Medical Microbiology. 3

MLS 341 — General Pathology/ Histopathology 3

MLS 303 — Med. Lab. Instrumentation /Tech. 3

Ancillary Courses

PHS 361 — Endocrinology. 2

PHS 371 — Reproduction. 1

PHM 301 — Basic pharmacology/toxicology 1. 3

GST Courses

GST 301 — Entrepreneurship Studies I. 1

Total of 22 credit loads

SECOND SEMESTER…

It’s still the same pattern as the first but here you will do more of the MLS games. One of my senior colleagues said ‘it is at this stage that you have finally entered the court’.

Core Courses

MLS 302 — Laboratory posting I. 3

MLS 304 — Molecular Genetics. 3

MLS 322 — Basic Blood Transfusion Science. 3

MLS 332 — Basic Medical Parasitology. 3

MLS 352 — Basic Immunology. 3

MLS 392 — Practical Exercise I. 1

Ancillary Courses

PHM 302 — Basic pharmacology/toxicology II. 3

GST Courses

GST 302 — Entrepreneurship Studies II. 1

Total of 20 credit loads

[In the ancillary course I removed Statistics 202 which has been adjusted by the board to be taken in our year 2.]

The 3 credit loads are the babas (big guys) of your CGPA fate. Once you get an A in any core cause the chances of getting good grades is high. Same applicable to other credit loads. Nonetheless, no one should be taken for granted (I saw the importance of 1 credit load in my year 2) so take heed, I speak from experience.

Advice…

The stress is real when you get here, but don’t get overwhelmed. In EBSU, once you’ve passed your second year (year 2) you are capable of getting to the end of your degree successfully.

Don’t loose faith, stay strong, persevere till the end and don’t stop praying. I’m currently in my second semester of year 3 and it is seemly looking overwhelming but I have chosen to trust God and you should!.

If you are like me that got admission by grace, that same grace is sufficient to carry you till the end.

Much Love From Me
