“I Will Karate You.” — Austin Shyu, Best Friend.

Hey, here are 10 songs you should love for the month of January 2023. Also, my ironclad, irrefutable reasons you should love them. There is no arguing, there is no debate; there is only love.

  1. Where to Start — Bully. Love this one for singer Alicia Bognanno’s raspy voice and the driving bassline that kicks things off into oblivion. Also “Fuck the win, are you in?” is a great lyric.
  2. I Remember You — Skid Row. You don’t love this song already? You are mistaken my friend. This song is an instant Prom whenever and wherever you play it. I don’t know what instant Prom means, but I’m spelling it Instant Prom from now on and using it all the time.
  3. yellow is the color of her eyes — Soccer Mommy. Dreamy guitars and a serene, thoughtful vocal delivery make this a good make out song or something perfect to cry your face off alone in your bedroom.
  4. Passenger Seat — Death Cab for Cutie. While Transatlanticism will always be my favorite song from this album, this song might be the best comedown track on any album, ever…the emotional investment that Transatlantisicm requires necessitates Passenger Seat to bring you back.
  5. Trust Me — Sincere Engineer. My most listened to song of 2022 according to Spotify. Why should you love it? Because we all self-sabotage, and I’m pretty certain everyone has felt the chorus of this song at some point in their lives to their core. Also, corndogs.
  6. CHOKE — The Warning. Big sound, big big sound. Me like big sound. Fuck off and listen to this.
  7. Last — Nine Inch Nails. Upon further listening, the best song from Broken. Unless I just listened to Wish, then that is the best song from Broken, unless I’ve just listened to Last, then that is the best song from Broken. Repeat. You should love it because that guitar riff is great.
  8. Summer Nights — Hazel English. This makes me want to go back in time and fall in love with my wife for the first time all over again. You should love this because you too, can fall in love with someone to it.
  9. You Make My Dreams (Come True). Daryl Hall and John Oates. Don’t pretend you don’t already love this one. While this one isn’t Instant Prom it’s catchy as hell and Daryl Hall is a treasure. Love it for Daryl Hall if no other reason.
  10. Mote — Sonic Youth. FUCK YES THIS SONG ALL THE WAY. You should love it because the last 4 minutes will still irritate your siblings and parents and the popular kids.

See ya later.
