Planning to paint some ceramics with acrylic? There are certain things that you need to know first. Read on to find out more.

Have you ever seen an artwork made out of clay and painted with acrylic? A piece like that is generally very beautiful, if it has been made carefully. Ceramic-acrylic artworks are not really difficult to make, but they do require a certain amount of skill to be done the right way. So if you are attempting to use your knack in colorful acrylic painting to create something new, there are a few things that you would need to know for fashioning a masterpiece out of your art tools.

Given below are the elementary steps prior to painting ceramics with acrylic:

#1. In order to use less paint for getting the work done, use spray paint for priming the pieces of ceramic. This is because fired ceramic is too porous to work on — its permeability is almost similar to that of an aquifer. Your best bet would be flat spray paint, but alternatively, you can even use gesso. The primer coating would prevent the paint from getting absorbed into the surface quickly.

#2. Bear in mind that acrylic paints are versatile & dry real quick, and need to be applied either directly from tubes or in thin layers such as watercolours. But one big difference between watercolour and acrylic is that the latter dries permanently and can be painted over again & again. And if you need to keep the acrylic dry, make sure it stays wet.

#3. When you are ready to get started with the task of painting, avoid putting a lot of water and paint on your brush. Rather, tap your brush on a paper towel or cloth and wait till no part of the brush is moving. Until you learn how to feel for the paint and brush, more water & paint would lead to issues like blotches and drips.

#4. If you are painting human figures and need to learn how to paint skin tones, find a good picture of a person in some magazine or newspaper. Mix and match colours and see if you can get the exact tone depicted in the image.

#5. In order to get accurate colors for other objects that you want to paint on your ceramics, make use of magazine and newspaper ads once again. The better you get at mixing colors, the more appealing your final results would be.

So go ahead and unleash your acrylic painting skills on some ceramic work.
