Thoughts and Prayers
Nathan Dennis

You do a wonderful job of highlighting how the devout should never make a show about praying. Unfortunately, you expect politicians to fix social ills. As a Christian, you should know better than that.

Mass shootings are merely a symptom of another “disease”. The same as abortion, having kids out of wedlock, wide spread cheating in college and many other conditions we see the public in today. Recent history has shown that if the guns are removed, people will turn to other tools. Recent history has shown that the majority of mass killers are not mentally ill either.

So, what is the “disease”? In Christianity and other religious beliefs, it is Pride. In secular parlance, it is known as Narcissism. Different names for the same beast. It is pride that drives most of them to kill, just like it is pride to drive all of us to commit all types of sin.

Various factors have been know to contribute to narcissistic behaviors.

  • An oversensitive temperament (personality traits) at birth.
  • Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback.
  • Excessive praise for good behaviors or excessive criticism for bad behaviors in childhood.
  • Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents, other family members, or peers.
  • Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or abilities by adults.
  • Severe emotional abuse in childhood.
  • Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents.
  • Learning manipulative behaviors from parents or peers.

Here’s another good book on the subject.

So, how did we get here? I submit to you that it was the rejection of Judaeo-Christian mores. These mores were grounded in selflessness and self-discipline. One did not have to be Christian or Jewish to see their value. In the old days, one could readily see how the stabilized society. My father followed these mores for most of his life when he was agnostic.

But those morals and ethics were rejected. You see, the pesky concept of sin got in the way of having a good time. Secular Humanism and Moral Relative took their place. People looked around and agreed that people are “basically good” and all truth is relative. Of course, when they came to that conclusion, the people around them were following Judaeo-Christian morals and ethics.

If people, by simply being, are defined as Good, and they are left for themselves to define Truth, then they become their own god. For God is the Good and source of all Truth, no? And this is what we have today. Millions of people that refuse to follow an external standard and instead believe that they are their own standard.

In a nation of over 300 million people, there has to be a few million out there who want to take in to the next level. These are not people with narcissistic tendencies. These are people with Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, and youths with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The numbers of people with these personalities are rapidly expanding.

The cure for the “disease” is to have a society that promotes and rewards selflessness and humility. That will never happen, of course. The West bit into that apple two generations ago. It’s hard to tell if the lose of our morality is the cause for the implosion of the West or merely a symptom. Either way, taking guns away, even if it were possible, won’t do diddly.
