Self care is as simple as caring for ourselves, but so many of us pass over this important step to our well-being on a daily basis. Everyone has busy lives and stress put on us and we are constantly doing things for everyone else. Although our society stresses selflessness, when it comes to our well-being we must be selfish. We need to take time for ourselves each day at the start of the day and the end for our mental and physical health. The constant stress we face is not only harmful to our mental health but stress also affects our physical health. Stress is a large cause of fast aging because it takes such a tremendous toll on our bodies. Be selfish for your well-being. Every morning I encourage you to do a short breathing exercise to start your day off on a relaxed note. Every night I encourage meditation. Meditation is a large part of self care because it keeps your mental health in line which then relates to your physical health. Meditation has been shown in several studies to lower stress and reduce anxiety. When you step back from the chaos and breath you realize that the particular events you are stressing about are not as big as they seem, therefore everyone’s small or large amount of depression decrease and happiness increases. Meditation as a form of self care is also shown to help mindfulness. Mindfulness is focusing on the now instead of dwelling on past events or stressing about the future. This can truly center our thoughts and be very good for our mental health. Try mediation once or twice a day as a very beneficial self care techniques. Having some form of anxiety myself, that comes in waves, I will definitely be trying this technique!
