Help influential businesspeople, entrepreneurs, and their companies make the most out of Medium
Medium has emerged as the new op-ed page for the business and start-up communities, where people who have ideas — of consequence or creativity — publish, interact meaningfully with an engaged, thoughtful audience, and drive conversation forward around issues of import.
Medium’s Biz/Tech team is a key driver of this activity, identifying, recruiting, and supporting high-profile executives, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and other professionals to successfully publish and engage here. Whether it’s Dov Charney expounding on American Apparel’s bankruptcy ruling, Pinterest engineer Tracy Chou writing about diversity in tech, Andreessen-Horowitz partner Scott Weiss reflecting on working parenting, or social impact entrepreneur Leila Janah sharing lessons from this year’s WEF in Davos, writers on Medium have an immediate impact on the world around them. We’re here to help them do so.
As an integral member of this team, the Biz/Tech Editor works to ensure writers from the tech and business worlds—whether Silicon Valley’s newest Unicorns or established multi-national corporations—experience success. This person has a thorough knowledge of Medium and the best ways to use it, which they tailor to assist current and future users; an editorial mindset; and an obsession with America’s most compelling business leaders and the biz/tech news cycle. As the point of contact for Medium’s influential writers from this world, this person has a sharp editorial eye and will provide feedback on posts; help users navigate the platform; and work to provide connections with other influential users, as well as develop strategies to help each writer create a robust presence here. The ideal candidate will be able to, among other things, provide a list of target executives for on-boarding; deliver a convincing pitch for joining; and create appropriate writing prompts, and/or help conceive of editorial projects for the business community.
We are building a new kind of media product, one with which people can speak directly to an impassioned, engaged, and influential audience. The Biz/Tech Editor will help drive platform adoption among some of the most prominent business writers and corporations in the world.
What will this role do?
Here’s what the job specifically entails:
- Tracking business news to generate ideas for executives with obvious incentives to join Medium and engage
- Pitching news-worthy companies and executives on joining Medium, and guiding them through on-boarding and creating their first few posts by sharing best practices
- Managing data and analytics related to user behavior, post performance, and audience development
- Acting as the point of contact for high-profile Medium user relationships, providing feedback and assistance
- Channeling feedback from users that will guide new feature development
- Developing unique editorial programming to engage leading businesspeople and entrepreneurs
- Systematizing Medium’s relationship with professional power lists, conferences, and business schools
Who will do well in this role?
The ideal candidate is based in New York and has 3–5 years of experience working in fast-paced media and/or tech environments, including start-ups, book/magazine publishing, or at an agency. He or she is an avid consumer of business and start-up news. S/he also has superior client services skills, is an exceptional writer and editor, has strong project management skills, and doesn’t miss a detail. S/he is extremely organized and has facility with data. S/he’s self-directed, flexible, and comfortable working independently in a satellite office. And this person should love Medium for its unique opportunities for expression and interaction.
