As someone who’s been aching to get into education for many of the same reasons you did, this was a warning I needed to read.
After visiting schools and seeing how broken the system is, and how teachers are set up not to succeed, I think I might put the teaching dream aside. Teachers like you are the kind of teachers I appreciated and relied on growing up (I was a similar student to you — smart, unpopular, curious about everything, and just strange.) If those kinds of atypical and wholly-themselves teachers can’t survive in the system, I don’t want to be a part of it.
I’ve personally started looking into progressive and alternative private schools, with more liberal pedagogies and curricula. Maybe check out that avenue?
