How To Write Prolifically

I love to write. Stories, scenes, poems, rants, imaginary letters, dreams… it’s my easiest form of expression.

With speaking, I have less control (or so it seems). Words spill out, stumble, get stuck. Maybe I could do with a good booting in the throat chakra. Nevertheless, I love to write.

If there’s one thing I (apparently) love more than writing it’s this ~

Thinking about writing.

Thoughts about a writing routine, or a desk to write at filled with things to inspire me. Fantasies of my identity as a writer. Ideas for stories, books, plays.

I spend more time thinking about writing than I do writing. Or at least more time writing ABOUT my thoughts on writing.

But what gives me the most satisfying feeling is when I fall into the flow of a story. I’m there, inside another world. I’m moving characters then co-creating with them.

So why don’t I spend more time actually writing?

Well… because I’m too busy thinking!

What am I going to do about it?

I’m going to get into the habit of opening up a writing page here on medium and writing. Little thoughts, more words. I’m going to write and I’m not going to worry about editing. Maybe I’ll come back to that later on, but until then, it’s all about the words.

Sharing my writing with others, whether liked or unliked, is good practise. My articles might look messy and sloppy but that’s not the point. This might be a ramble but it’s an honest ramble.

Also, you can write anywhere.

  • On the back of old receipts while waiting in the car
  • On envelopes from letters and bills in the kitchen whilst waiting for the oven to pre-heat
  • On notes on your phone whilst sittin on the toilet

What I mean to say is, you don’t need a dedicated writing space, structured time, a feather and ink, and so on, to write. You don’t need anything other than the object you’re writing on.

So, happy writing folks. Let it be messy, let it be clean, let it be witty or shit.
